About the Scroll Test

The test sums the scroll distance your wheel reports each event, giving speed in pixels per second and total distance for the run.

Notched wheels report chunky fixed steps, while free-spinning wheels and trackpads report a smooth stream of small deltas - both are measured correctly.

Direction changes you did not make are the classic symptom of a dirty or worn wheel encoder - scroll steadily downward and watch that counter.

Scroll speed differs between browsers and OS settings because each maps wheel ticks to pixels differently; compare runs on the same setup.

A wheel that skips, stutters, or scrolls backwards intermittently can often be fixed by cleaning the encoder before replacing the mouse.

Free-spin modes on some mice reach enormous speeds - switch modes between runs to see the difference in peak px/s.

What the scroll test measures

Scroll results mix your finger speed with how your OS and browser scale wheel events, so treat scores as comparable only on one setup.

Both mouse wheels and trackpads work here. For hardware diagnostics, a real wheel gives the clearest signal.

What it detects

What unusual results can mean

Rising direction changes during steady scrolling indicate encoder wear; long gaps between events can mean a slipping wheel or dropped input.

Browser and system limits

The page reads wheel events after OS scroll-speed settings and browser scaling are applied, so system settings directly shift the numbers.

Mobile limits

Touch scrolling on phones uses touch events, not wheel events, so this test is meant for computers with a mouse or trackpad.

Common questions about scroll speed and wheel problems

How does the scroll test measure speed?

Every wheel event reports a scroll delta in pixels. The test adds them up inside the capture area and calculates live speed over the last second, peak speed, and average speed across the whole run.

Why does my page jump back up while scrolling down?

That is usually a failing wheel encoder: dust or wear makes it misread rotation direction for a tick or two. If the direction-change counter rises while you scroll steadily one way, the wheel hardware - not your software - is the culprit.

Why do I get different scores in different browsers?

Browsers and operating systems translate wheel ticks into pixel deltas differently, and settings like 'lines per notch' change the multiplier. Scores are comparable only on the same browser, OS, and mouse settings.

My wheel scrolls but clicking it does nothing - can this test check that?

This page measures wheel rotation only. The middle-click button under the wheel is a separate switch - test it on our main CPS test area or in your mouse software.

Can I test trackpad scrolling here?

Yes - two-finger trackpad scrolling fires the same wheel events, usually as a smooth stream of small deltas with inertia. It is a fair way to compare trackpad scrolling feel across machines, though not directly against a notched wheel.
